The Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Research on Biological Resources is the biodiversity research branch of the National Environmental System (Sina). The institute is a civil nonprofit corporation linked to the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development. The Institute is responsible for carrying out scientific research on biodiversity in Colombia. This includes research on hydrobiological and genetic resources. In addition, the Institute coordinates the National System of Information on Biodiversity and the formation of the national biodiversity inventory.

The Marine Natural History Museum of Colombia (MHNMC) – Makuriwa, that is part of the Marine and Coastal Research Institute (INVEMAR) holds the most important, numerous and well documented marine biological collections of the country. The Museum is registered in the National Register of Biological Collections (http://rnc.humboldt.org.co/wp/) since 2001 (Registration No. 82). The first lots in the museum are from the 1960s. Most of the collections are organized by phylum, with some exceptions such as Fishes, Plankton, Fungi, Bacteria and the Tissue collection. Samples of the museum are mostly from the Caribbean Sea, however, also from the Tropical Eastern Pacific, as marine areas belonging to the country, whose research is the INVEMAR mission. Most of the data associated with biological collections are available online through the Marine Biodiversity Information System (SiBM) (https://siam.invemar.org.co/sibm) which is the marine node of SiB-Colombia; through the IPT-SiBM https://ipt.biodiversidad.co/sibm); and through GBIF and OBIS, since INVEMAR is a data provider.

Biobank of blood and DNA from amphibian, reptiles, birds, mammals and their hemoparasites from Apicomplexan, Kinetiplastida and Nematoda taxa. Samples are stored in ethanol, SET buffer or EDTA at -20°C. DNA extracted from some infected and non-infected vertebrate are resuspended in TE and stored at -20°C. GERPH collection also has microscopic preparations as specimen voucher material and photographic record of the hosts.

CBG Collections maintains a globally unique natural history collection of 3.3 million specimens. Every specimen is digitized, and the exact storage location of each specimen is tracked in a collection management information system for quick reference and retrieval. The databased information for every voucher is also archived in the Barcode of Life Data System (BOLD; www.boldsystems.org), permitting the permanent storage, validation and analysis of barcode sequence data and associated specimen metadata. Most (88.6%) of the specimens have been DNA barcoded, and a few representatives of every species have been digitally imaged.

CPMA was established in 1989, at CPQBA - Chemical, Biological and Agricultural Pluridisciplinary Research Center, at UNICAMP - Campinas State University, in the city of Paulinia, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The first species were donated by the University of Brasilia and CENARGEN – Genetic Resources and Biotechnology Research Center of EMBRAPA – Brazilian National Agricultural Research Company. Since then, the Collection has received donations from various research institutions, private farmers and kept samplings from several research projects The Collection has approximately 3.000 specimens (650 species and 78 botanical families) of wild and domesticated medicinal and aromatic plants from different regions of Brazil and the world. CPMA is one of the main bases for scientific research and technology development by CPQBA-UNICAMP and Brazilian and International partner institutions. The species arrive at the Collection, in most cases, with information on their biological characteristics and folk uses, what supports research and development, processes of domestication and scientific evaluation. All information is available in a database online documentation with photos; the data are available in Splink and IABIN network. CPMA is approved since 2005 as a Trusted Biorepository by the Brazilian Federal Environment Ministry and became an associate member of the GGBN - Global Genomic Biodiversity Network in 2014.

The main criterion for inclusion of samples in the JBRJ DNA Bank is that they come from Brazilian native flora.

These are the concepts that guide the actions of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), under the Ministry of Health, the most prominent institution of science and technology in health in Latin America. Fiocruz has established its headquarters in the campus located in Manguinhos in the North of Rio de Janeiro state, where are the historic buildings of the former Federal Serum Therapy Institute (Instituto Soroterápico Federal). - as the Moorish Pavilion, the Pavilion of the Clock and Stable. Other six units are in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Recife, Manaus, Brasilia and Curitiba. Besides, there are new units that are being structured, as part of the national expansion project of Fiocruz, relating to policies for decentralization of research and training of human resources, promoted by the Federal Government. The new units of Fiocruz that are in development will be implemented in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul, Ceará, Rondônia and Piauí. Fiocruz has as one of its missions to preserve heritage buildings regarded to its history and its fields of activity. The campuses of the Foundation in Rio de Janeiro, in addition to harbor important architectural specimens of various periods, have high potential urban and landscape. The preservation of this heritage is responsibility of technical staff of the Department of Historical Heritage (DPH) of the Oswaldo Cruz House.
