Description: The Museum of Southwestern Biology (MSB), Division of Genomic Resources (DGR) is a centralized repository at the University of New Mexico (UNM) for cryogenic biological materials submitted from MSB divisions at the University of New Mexico and from other individuals and institutions worldwide. The MSB DGR collection archives cryogenically preserved samples of animal tissues, whole organisms such as embryos and parasites, and purified DNA and RNA for the MSB divisions of Mammals, Birds, Fishes, Herpetology, and Parasitology. Description: The Museum of Southwestern Biology (MSB) is a research natural history collection at the University of New Mexico. The museum consists of seven divisions (Amphibians and Reptiles, Arthropods, Birds, Fishes, Genomic Resources, Herbarium, Mammals, and Parasites) and the Natural Heritage New Mexico program. Description: The University of Alaska Museum of the North\'s Genomic Resources facility contains over 200,000 tissue samples from voucher specimens archived in the Mammalogy, Ornithology, Ichthyology and Entomology collections. Collection holdings can be searched on Arctos, a Collaborative Collection Management Solution. The geographic and taxonomic composition of the tissue collection is largely determined by the research interests of the museum curators and other local and regional biologists conducting research that involves specimen collection. It is the largest collection of such material from Alaskan species, with tissue samples dating back to 1936, though preserving fresh tissue did not become standard practice until the early 1990s. The storage facility consists of eight liquid nitrogen-cooled cryovats that maintain vapor-phase nitrogen at -170C (-274F).

Funded by the Belgian Science Policy (Belspo), BCCM/GeneCorner, previously known as BCCM/LMBP, is a unique plasmid repository in Europe. BCCM/GeneCorner warrants the long-term storage and distribution of plasmids, microbial host strains and DNA libraries of fundamental, biotechnological, educational or general scientific importance. BCCM/GeneCorner also accepts natural and genetically modified animal or human cell lines, including hybridomas, as well as other genetic material, in the safe deposit and patent deposit collections. BCCM/GeneCorner provides a number of scientific services, such as characterisation tests (plasmid profile analysis, sequence analysis of non-characterised plasmids,...). BCCM/GeneCorner is ISO 9001:2008 certified for accession, control, preservation, storage and supply of biological material and related information in the frame of public deposits, safe deposits and patent deposits.

DescriptionForSpecialists: The focus is on the collection of recombinant plasmids that can replicate in a microbial host strain, with main interest for: - empty cloning plasmids useful for recombinant (over)expression of proteins of interest in bacteria, yeast, fungi, insect cells, plant and animal cells; - (expression) plasmids carrying specific protein-coding genes and derivatives from a wide range of organisms (human, mouse, various bacterial species, ...); - expression plasmids with specific non-coding genes such as shRNA and miRNA; - plasmids for mouse genetic engineering, allowing the generation of transgenic mice. By default, BCCM/GeneCorner plasmids are distributed as 1 ml plasmid-carrying cultures, grown to saturation in selective, liquid medium. Plasmid DNA (2,5 µg, 25 µg or a custom amount) is available on specific request.

Our collection is specialized in mycbobacteria from human, animal and environmental origin. The collection holds over 700 freeze-dried strains and DNA extracts for a selection of them. We accept public and safe deposits, and distribute viable bacilli as well as DNA extracts.

DescriptionForSpecialists: BCCM/ITM focuses on Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex strains representing different drug-resistance profiles and genotypes. It also houses the former TDR-TB Strain bank (Vincent et al., 2012), with documented minimal inhibitory concentrations to first and/or second line anti-TB drugs and whole genome sequence data. In addition, we offer a broad variety of non-tuberculous mycobacteria, with an emphasis on the clinically most relevant species. DNA extracts are provided as thermolysates, but purified genomic DNA can be retrieved upon request.

Description: The BCCM/ULC collection is part of the BCCM consortium (Belgian Coordinated Collections of Micro-organisms) and is hosted by the InBios-Centre for Protein Engineering at the University of Liège. BCCM/ULC is a dedicated public collection, currently containing one of the largest collection of documented (sub)polar cyanobacteria worldwide. The collection holds 240 strains, of which the majority is characterized by phenotypic (morphological features based on microscopic observations) and genotypic (16S rRNA and ITS sequences) analyses. The three most important orders of cyanobacteria (Chroococcales, Oscillatoriales, Nostocales) are represented. The strains are unicyanobacterial, but not axenic. They are available as living cultures, and the majority is being cryopreserved (-80°C).

Description: The herbarium of the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem (herbarium acronym: B) is the largest in Germany and holds a collection of more than 3.5 million preserved specimens. All plant groups – flowering plants, ferns, mosses, liverworts, and algae, as well as fungi and lichens – are represented in the collections which are worldwide in scope. Associated with the general herbarium are special collections of dried fruits and seeds, wood samples, and specimens preserved in alcohol. The collections of the herbarium are growing constantly through field research conducted by staff, and through gifts, acquisitions, and exchanges of specimens from other herbaria. The BGBM is a founding member of GGBN as well as its precursor project DNA Bank Network and currently hosting the technical secretariat of GGBN.

Description: The Centre for Biodiversity Genomics (CBG) at the University of Guelph is spearheading a novel approach to biodiversity research within Canada and internationally. Its three research units -- CBG Collections, CBG Genomics (or the Canadian Centre for DNA Barcoding, CCDB) and CBG Informatics -- are advancing 21st century biodiversity science by enabling species identification and discovery that is based on the analysis of sequence diversity in short, standardized gene regions, DNA barcodes. CBG Collections maintains a globally unique natural history collection of 3.3 million specimens. Every specimen is digitized, and the exact storage location of each specimen is tracked in a collection management information system for quick reference and retrieval. Description: Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) promotes health and social development, generates and disseminates scientific and technological knowledge, be an agent of citizenship. Description: HNHM is one of the outstanding institutions of the Hungarian cultural and scientific life. It is one of the largest natural history collections among the Central and Eastern European institutions, comprising more than 10.1 million items, among them 200,000 type specimens including 44,110 primary types. They hold the most important reference and historical collections for the entire Carpathian Basin, major portions of the Balkans, C, E and SE Asia. HNHM holds important 200-300 years old historical collections. The best represented areas are the Palaearctic, Oriental and Ethiopian biogeographic regions, and in case of soil animals also the tropical part of S America. The collections are well organised so the desired specimens or taxa can easily be retrieved. The Bird, Mammal, Anthropological, Mineralogical, and parts of the Invertebrate collections were recently moved into state-of-the-art storage areas, which provide an excellent environment for preservation and improved the access to the collections. The staff are leading experts in their fields thus represent rare or unique expertise in Europe, which is demonstrated by our involvement in establishing NATURA 2000 and National Biodiversity-monitoring System (NBmR), LIFE+ and LIFE IP programs, European fauna monographs, Balkan flora monographs, EU-COST Actions, etc. Consultation with phytosanitary and quarantine specialists is part of the HNHM core work. The library with more than 300,000 volumes is the nationally recognized centre for natural history and it holds one of the most important archives for natural historians in Central and Eastern Europe.

Description: The Inala Jurassic Garden (IJG) is a privately-owned educational facility and botanic garden which highlights the Gondwanan connections of a range of living plant families from the southern land-masses of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, South America and New Caledonia. The living collection is comprised of over 700 species from 50+ families and is open to the public every day except Christmas Day. Interpretive signs are placed around the garden for self-guided visitors and guided garden tours are available on request. The garden is situated within a 1,500 privately owned conservation-covenanted reserve In Tasmania, Australia. Title: Tissue and DNA Collection (Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History)

Description: The museum’s genetic resource collections began more than 40 years ago as curator-driven research material. Over time, we realized that dispersed collections are vulnerable to equipment failures and sample mismanagement or loss. Therefore, we began an organized effort to centralize these collections, first within some research departments, and then throughout the museum. In 2010 NMNH constructed a biorepository, which began receiving collections in 2011. The current capacity is approximately 4.2 million 2 ml cryovials that are housed in 76 ultra-cold mechanical and liquid nitrogen freezers and a small number of refrigerators. All cold storage units are monitored constantly for performance. NMNH uses a modified version of FreezerPro (Ruro.com) to maintain and track inventory. FreezerPro is connected via an Application Programming Interface (API) to KE EMu, the museum’s catalog system. EMu provides a limited form of the catalog information to allow easier identification of samples. Each vial is assigned a locally unique Biorepository Number by FreezerPro to facilitate a unified system for locating and identifying samples. The collection includes insects, birds, terrestrial plants, marine and terrestrial invertebrates, algae, fish, reptiles, mammals, amphibians, bacteria and protozoans. Current strengths are in bird, marine and terrestrial mammal, and insect holdings, although significant projects have been initiated that will broaden and deepen the taxonomical representation as well as environments. Human tissues, commercial, and agricultural products are not a part of the collection. A complete inventory of all holdings is underway. The entire collection presently numbers more than 250,000 and could be twice that number. All these materials are available for use in genomic research, toxicology studies and environmental monitoring.

Description: Northwestern University Ecological Park (NUEBG) was established as a plant diversity conservation facility and repository in the Northwestern Luzon, Philippines. It houses living plant collection as well as an herbarium - The Herbarium of the Northwestern Luzon, Philippines with international code HNUL, including a small collection of preserved natural history specimen.It also preserve seeds and pollen and spores of plants and fungi as part of the Millenium Seedbank Partnership program, and a DNA collecting project as an output of the Global Genome Initiative in 2021-2022. Description: The Swedish Museum of Natural History is a major research institute that combines a venerable tradition with modern working methods. NRMs invaluable collections of more than 10 million biological, paleontological and geological specimens constitute an amazing archive of the natural world. Title: University of Kansas Biodiversity Institute ichthyology tissue collection

Description: The University of Kansas Ichthyology frozen tissue collection continues to expand rapidly and has broad representation of both marine and freshwater fish diversity - 11,000 individual tissue samples from 2384 taxa (297 families and 1077 genera) and 38 countries (Australia, Belize, Ethiopia, Fiji, Nepal, Seychelles, South Africa and Tonga etc., as well as oceanic localities). The collections and the scope of research activities in the division continue to grow due to the ongoing activities of ichthyology staff and students. The collection is used by national and international researchers as well as by state and federal agencies. The Division of Ichthyology is designated as a Regional Center in the Midwest and Great Plains Regions (Collette & Lachner 1976, Copeia 1976: 625-642; Poss and Collette 1995, Copeia 1995: 48-70) and is among the top twenty ichthyological collections in the country. Almost 60% of the specimens in the collection are from the Great Plains Region. The collection is an important resource for anyone interested in the region’s fishes. The data concerning these faunas are not extensively duplicated by other ichthyological collections. The tissue collection comprises tissue samples originally collected in liquid nitrogen, DMSO and ethanol and stored in state-of-the-art liquid nitrogen dewars at -170°C. The tissues are made up mostly of muscle tissue but also includes, liver and other internal organs, fin clips and whole specimens. Description: The KU Biodiversity Institute studies the life of the planet for the benefit of the Earth and its inhabitants. The institute, including the KU Natural History Museum, accomplishes this mission through the acquisition, curation and study of collections of plants, animals, fossil material and cultural artifacts for undergraduate, graduate and public education, as well as research and public and professional service.
